Wilma passed away Saturday evening at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of 89 years, 11 months and 28 days.

Wilma Lillian Buchanan, daughter of Joseph and Margaret Kutin Yukl, was born January 1, 1923 in Traer, Iowa. The family moved to a farm near Reinbeck where she grew up. While in high school she was a cheerleader, she enjoyed playing saxophone in the marching band and attending summer church camp. Following her high school graduation in 1940, she attended Cornell College. She later married Warren Breakenridge, they settled on a farm near Dinsdale. To that union four children were born, Judi, Scott, Jenny and Susan. After moving to Waterloo in 1956, she worked at Iowa Public Service (now MidAmerican Energy) as a customer service representative. She retired after 23 years of service and moved to Ocala, FL with her husband Jack Buchanan. She later lived in Delray Beach, FL. Wilma was a 50 year member in Eastern Star and a member of a Presbyterian Church for most of her life; she served as a deacon, sang in the choir and volunteered in numerous capacities. She loved gardening, knitting, reading and spending time with her family. She was an enthusiastic game and card player and became a world traveler. Around her 70th birthday she received from her children a pair of swans, Romeo and Juliet; she adored them and they loved her in return. Wilma moved to University Park in 1996 to reside with her daughter Jenny, whose loving care nurtured her for 16 years. For the past three years, Wilma has resided at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab; her family will be forever grateful for the tender loving care their staff gave her.

Wilma’s family includes her children: Judi Risk of Palm Desert, CA; Scott (Judy) Breakenridge of Hudson, IA; Jennifer Breakenridge of University Park, IA and Susan O’Donnell of Whitehouse Station, NJ; eight grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Soper of Lenexa, KS.

In addition to her parents, Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Jack Buchanan; sisters: Evelyn Sheldon and Agnes Yukl as an infant; and her niece, Janice Van Horn.

Memorial Service: 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 02, 2013 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dr. Dennis Morey officiating.
Visitation: 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 02, 2013 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel.
Interment: Private family inurnment will be in Buckingham Cemetery near Traer, Iowa.
