William Penn Ends 2012 with Win Over St. Scholastica
Oskaloosa–The Lady Statesmen basketball team finished the 2012 calendar year with a 79-56 non-conference victory over St. Scholastica (Minn.) Saturday.
William Penn (8-6) was tied with the Saints just twice in the first two minutes, but pulled away to lead 37-25 at the break. The advantage remained in double figures throughout the entire second stanza as the hosts owned a 45.9%-31.8% shooting edge.
Katie Golomski (So., Milwaukee, Wis., Psychology) paced the hosts with 17 points, including hitting all of her team’s three-pointers.
Janay Pritchett (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Biology) added 16 points with five assists, while Orielle Thomas (Sr., Waynesville, Mo., Physical Education) narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Jessie Kreuser (So., Mendota Heights, Minn., Undecided) reached double figures as well with 11 points off the bench.
Morgan Evans (Sr., Creston, Iowa, Industrial Technology) and Sarah Martin (Sr., Anthem, Ariz., Physical Education) both managed seven points and Sam Abens (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education) added six points.
Thomas recorded the game’s only block, and also joined Golomski and Evans with three steals.
The navy and gold committed just 12 turnovers, while forcing 16 Saint mistakes. William Penn also outrebounded its foe 48-45 and overcame a 14-8 deficit in made free throws.
“This was a good win coming back from break,” Head Coach Mike Brown said. “It was good to face a team that did not back down. We need to learn how to finish teams off better. Sam, Sarah, and Janay did a great job of controlling the pace of the game by constantly pushing the ball ahead.”
“I also thought Jesse did some great things on the inside and Morgan really did lots that you do not see in the stat lines,” Brown added. “In the end, our speed and athleticism was too much for them.”
