Leonard James Moore, 93, of Oskaloosa died Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa. He was born Saturday, December 21, 1918 in rural Mahaska County, north of Rose Hill, the son of Lloyd Raymond and Estella Mae Landgrebe Moore. He attended Mahaska County country schools. On June 9, 1940 he was united in marriage to Nadine Lisk in Lancaster, Missouri at the Christian Church parsonage. After farming for several years with his father, he worked at John Morrell in Ottumwa for 25 years. He then went to work at Mahaska Industries in Oskaloosa until his retirement. In retirement he worked for two years as the custodian for the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa. Leonard became a member of the Oskaloosa First Christian Church in 1954 and served on the church board as well as other committees. He was a member of the Mahaska County Farm Bureau and a former member of the Knights of Pythias. He loved his family and his church, and took great pride in keeping a beautiful lawn and flower garden. His favorite pastime was camping, especially at the State Fair.
Leonard is survived by his wife of over 72 years: Nadine Moore of Oskaloosa; his children: Sherry (& Richard) Lancial of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Judy (& Mike) Braden of Oskaloosa, and James (& Denise) Moore of Altoona; 9 grandchildren: Tammie Elliott, Tina Fonder, Tony Bartlow, Terry and Thor Lancial, Michelle Engelhardt, Justin Braden, and Logan and Derek Moore; 10 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; a sister-in-law: Eileen Moore; and a brother-in-law: Edward (& Betty) Lisk.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Darrell Moore; two sisters: Betty Hensyel, and Jeanne Van Dyk and a son-in-law: Richard Bartlow.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 13, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Michael Omundson officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Wednesday at 1:00 P.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with the family present at the funeral chapel from 5:30 – 7:30 P.M. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church Building Fund or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
