Vicente Wins 133-Pound Weight Class at BV Open
Storm Lake–Joao Vicente (Fr., East Providence, R.I., Secondary Education) crushed the opposition on his way to a title at the Buena Vista Open Saturday.
Vicente won all five of his matches to claim the 133-pound crown. His first win came via fall, while his next four, including an 11-1 victory over top-seeded Austin Mogg of Concordia (Neb.), were all by major decision. The freshman, whose title is his first at the collegiate level, opened the day as the #2 seed.
Joe Sumner (Jr., Delaware, Ohio, Physical Education) also placed, taking fifth at 174 pounds. The junior finished with a 5-2 record, highlighted by two falls and one major decision. He also upset the top seed, doing so in his second match of the day.
157-pounder Ishmael Rempson (So., Olympia Fields, Ill., Industrial Technology) had a big day as well, finishing 4-2 with two falls.
A trio of Statesmen won three matches Saturday. 141-pounder Brad Watson (Fr., Rolla, Wis., Physical Education), with two falls, and 149-pounders Lane Colwell (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa, Computer Science), with one fall and one major decision, and Charlton Benjamin (So., Atlanta, Ga., Sociology), with one fall, all accomplished the feat.
David Jones (Fr., Bryan, Texas, Industrial Technology), with two falls at heavyweight, and Christian Padilla (So., Tampa, Fla., Secondary Education), with one fall at 165 pounds, were both 2-2.
141-pounder Jay Fresh (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa, Sociology), 197-pounder Brandon Blanchard (Jr., St. Louis, Mo., Sociology), and heavyweight Nathan Merical (Jr., Grinnell, Iowa, Secondary Education) all picked up a victory via fall, while 149-pounder Marshawn Lacy (So., Chicago Heights, Ill., Computer Science) and 197-pounder Mark Gadson (So., Deerfield Beach, Fla., Physical Education) were also victorious at the Open.
