AMES—The Central College track and field squads launched their new season with an exclamation mark Friday night, taking down a trio of school records at the Cyclone Holiday Preview.

Horton doubles up—Two races produced two records for newly-minted cross country all-American Eli Horton (sophomore, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS). Horton kicked off the meet by winning the 5,000-meter run in 14 minutes, 37.72 seconds while freshman Cole Decker (Des Moines, West Des Moines Dowling HS) took second in a time of 14:55.84. Both runners bettered Adam Wolf’s previous mark of 14:56.56 from 2007.

Horton followed up with his second win of the day (8:37.14) en route to cracking Bryan George’s 3,000-meter record from 2006 (8:39.73). Decker again finished runner-up in 8:48.5.

Several other Dutch athletes placed or improved their marks on Central’s all-time top-10 lists. Dan Roemerman (freshman, Iowa City, City HS) was 13th in the 60-meter hurdles final after recording a mark of 8.47 in the preliminary rounds. LJ Lipscomb (sophomore, Johnston) was eighth in the 600-yard run (1:14.3), and Aaron Fuller (senior, Aberdeen, S.D., Roncalli HS) was third in the pentathlon (3,045 points).

Coleman resets previous mark—Senior Felicia Coleman (Houston, Texas, J. Frank Dobie HS) bettered her previous school record in the 60-meter dash, placing seventh in the final in a time of 7.85 seconds. Her prior mark of 7.89 was set at the 2012 Iowa Conference championships meet.

Central’s squads will resume their season Jan. 26 at the second annual Dutch Athletics Classic. Events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
