William Penn Falls in Double Overtime to McPherson
North Newton, Kan.–The Lady Statesmen basketball team was forced to play two extra sessions Friday, but unfortunately there was not a happy ending to the night as William Penn fell 73-70 to McPherson in double overtime.
William Penn (2-4) was outshot 40.7%-36.0% and trailed 21-8 in free throws, but stayed in the game by forcing 31 Bulldog turnovers.
The Lady Statesmen overcame a three-point halftime deficit to force overtime. Both teams scored seven points in the first overtime, but McPherson (2-3) came up with three more points (8-5) in the second extra period for the victory.
Orielle Thomas (Sr., Waynesville, Mo., Physical Education) paced the navy and gold with a big double-double of 22 points and 18 rebounds. It is the senior’s third double-double of the season.
Makenzie Ficek (Jr., Eugene, Ore., Sociology) also reached double figures off the bench. She managed a season-high 15 points on 5-of-8 three-point shooting.
Sarah Martin (Sr., Anthem, Ariz., Physical Education) added nine points with a team-best four assists, while Brittany May (Jr., Gladstone, Ore., Biology) hit two trifectas en route to eight points. Katie Golomski (So., Milwaukee, Wis., Psychology) and Jessie Kreuser (So., Mendota Heights, Minn., Undecided) both stole three passes.
The Lady Statesmen fell short on the boards, losing the rebounding battle 53-39.
