County Supervisors Complete Canvassing

Mahaska County Supervisors canvass the 2012 election

by Amy Langdon

Oskaloosa, Iowa – In local political news, the Mahaska County Supervisors completed the canvassing process Tuesday, giving final approval of Mahaska County’s election results.

Canvassing is required by state law. It’s a process where the supervisors inspect all the results returned by the poll workers after the November 6th general election. They make sure numbers add up correctly, as well as tallying all write-in votes for offices like County Public Hospital Trustee, Soil & Water Conservation District Commissioner, County Agricultural Extension Council and township trustees.

There were names on the ballot for some of those offices but often not enough to fill all the positions. The write-in results have been sent to each group for confirmation that the write-in winners will accept the posts. The county has not released those names as of yet.

Susan Brown from the auditor’s office says receipt of some additional absentee ballots postmarked just before the deadline mean there are small modifications to Mahaska County’s totals but the canvassing process yielded no dramatic changes to the results.
