Norma Hasselman, 68, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born July 17, 1944, at Oskaloosa, the daughter of Henry and Ruth Klyn Vande Wall. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1962. Early on she worked at Superior Ideal in Oskaloosa. In December of 1963, she was united in marriage to Ron Walden and later divorced. In August of 1969, Norma was married to Dave Miller and later divorced. Norma stayed home and cared for her children. On September 10, 1995, Norma was united in marriage to Wayne Hasselman at Pella, Wayne died August 5, 2011. After her children were all in school, she went to work at McDonald’s in Oskaloosa. She worked over 25 years, she retired from being the breakfast manager in early 2011. She was a member of the Omega Church in Oskaloosa. She enjoyed traveling, doing puzzles and gardening. Norma was a devoted caregiver to her family, early on to her children, to her elderly mother and lastly taking care of Wayne as his illness progressed. She had the spirit of a fighter, in February of 2012 she was diagnosed with late stage cancer; she did not let this diagnosis define her life. Norma integrated her treatments into daily life, and continued to do the things she enjoyed throughout her journey. Norma’s positive attitude in the wake of her diagnosis served as an inspiration to those around her.

Her family includes her three daughters, Kathleen (& Ron) Goldsmith of Hiawatha, Karlene (& John) Marks of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, and Karen Miller of Bloomfield; four grandchildren, Grant and Alex Goldsmith and Ian and Alyssa Marks; two step sons, Gary (& Amy) VanHemert of Ottumwa and Curtis VanHemert of Oskaloosa; 15 step grandchildren; many step great grandchildren; her brother, Cliff (& Leilani) Vande Wall of Oskaloosa; a nephew, Brad Vande Wall and a niece, Megan Vande Wall.

In addition to her husband Wayne, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 12, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor David Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery near Leighton. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Sunday morning after 11 in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Sunday afternoon from 1-3 to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Central Iowa.
