Lady Statesmen Claim 2-1 Upset in Regular Season Finale

William Penn Women’s Athletics

Oskaloosa–The William Penn women’s soccer team picked up a big win to end its regular season, slipping by Culver-Stockton (Mo.) 2-1 in non-conference play Tuesday.

The Lady Statesmen (3-15) knocked off the Wildcats (8-7-1) despite being outshot 24-10.

Emmanuella Meneide (Jr., Turks and Caicos, Biology) got her team on the board first at the 15:00 mark. Silvia Munoz (Fr., Paramount, Calif., Elementary Education) centered a pass in front of the goal and Meneide put a good foot on the ball, only for it to be stopped by the Culver-Stockton keeper. The attempt bounded off the keeper back to the junior, however, who buried it in the netting for her team-leading sixth goal.

The margin stood until the late minutes with the Wildcats making things interesting by knotting it up in the 86th minute.

Fortunately, Jordan Davis (Sr., Centerville, Ohio, Physical Education), one of six seniors honored at halftime on Senior Day, made her final game in Oskaloosa memorable by finishing off a corner kick from Munoz with only 1:46 remaining. Davis now has three goals this fall, while Munoz’s two assists give her a squad-best five for the season.

Amber Klootwyk (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa, Business Management/Education) saved five shots in the win.

“I am really pleased with tonight’s result,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said. “Our girls deserved this win after how hard they worked and played the last few games. Our recent scores do not show how difficult we have made it for our opponents so this win reinforces we are going in the right direction.”

“For Jordan to score the game-winner on Senior Night was the icing on the cake,” McGowan said. “I am so proud of our team for stepping up late when we could have so easily given up.”

William Penn opens up postseason play Saturday by facing Grand View in the quarterfinals of the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament. Action begins at 1 p.m.

“Grand View will be a very difficult opponent and we will go out with a similar plan to frustrate and put pressure on them in key areas,” McGowan said. “Our effort was very good last week and we will need every bit of that effort and more on Saturday.”
