GRINNELL’S KRULL LOSES HARD-FOUGHT OPENING-ROUND MATCH AT USTA/ITA NATIONAL SMALL COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

MOBILE, Ala. – Grinnell College women’s tennis player Laura Krull ’13 put up a good fight, but in the end dropped a three-set match Thursday in the opening round of the 2012 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships.

Third-seeded Brittni Fausett of Mary Hardin Baylor posted a 6-0, 3-6, 6-0 victory over Krull (New Braunfels, Texas/Keystone National) to advance to the semifinal round.

“Laura ran into a pretty strong baseliner from Mary Hardin Baylor,” said Grinnell coach Andy Hamilton. “Because Brittni played a play-in match Wednesday, she was sharp with her ground strokes. Nonetheless, Laura figured out a nice game plan and was executing it well during the second set. But partway through that set, she experienced heat difficulties. Even though she prevailed in that set, the heat continued to bother her through the third set.

“Hat’s off to Brittni for her early success at this meet,” Hamilton added. “I am very pleased with the fight Laura showed and her being able to figure out a way to grab a set. I’m hoping with an early start time on Friday she’ll have fewer heat issues and really be able to show her tennis stuff.”

Krull will meet Ava Sadeghi of Vassar in the consolation semifinals Friday.

“When you’re playing against the top eight or nine players in the country, the level of play is extremely high,” Hamilton said. “Laura and I found out she’s going to have to execute at a higher level to find a victory.”
