The William Penn women’s bowling team is set to compete in its first tournament of the season this weekend by traveling to Wauwatosa, Wis. for the Midwest Collegiate Tournament.
The Lady Statesmen will rely on a strong core of seniors to lead the team along with the guidance of two-time defending Midwest Collegiate Conference Head Coach Mark Van Wyk. Coach Van Wyk guided the team to an impressive 11th-place national ranking last year and aiming to top that this campaign.
“When everyone works together and the team concept is placed first, there are no limits,” Van Wyk said. “I have high goals for this team and am hoping they will compete at their potential and end the season ranked very high in the nation.”
Following an impressive third year, the bar is set extremely high as the Lady Statesmen bowlers have goals of attaining a second nationals berth, another league title, and their first non-conference tournament win. Last year, William Penn placed in the top ten in every tournament and has high hopes of taking another step forward. The women’s team has centered itself around the motto “Coming Together is a beginning, Keeping Together is a Progress, and Working Together is Success!”
Leading the team in 2012-2013 is senior captain and Graduate Assistant Breanne Underwood.
“I am extremely blessed to be a member of such a great team where my teammates are my friends and family whom I rely on away from home,” Underwood said.
The team will also have leadership from a strong core of five other seniors, including Samantha Powell, Abigayle Wempen, Jessica Ganem, Amanda Edenholm, and Leah Early.
“I feel so lucky to have our strongest team yet for my senior year,” Powell said. “With our teamwork and motivation, nothing can stop us!”
Further aiding the team is the returning group of Kirstin Newberry, Kelsey Johnson, and Samantha McCauley. In addition to the strong returning squad, new talent has been brought aboard in the form of L’Neisha Porter, Jenna Reynolds, Blair Farris, and Emily Braga.
