Lady Statesmen Swept by Viterbo
La Crosse, Wis.–The William Penn volleyball team struggled against its toughest foe on its longest league trip of the year, losing 3-0 to #19 Viterbo in Midwest Collegiate Conference play Wednesday.
The Lady Statesmen (19-7, 1-1 MCC) fell by scores of 12-25, 14-25, 8-25. The setback ends the team’s nine-game win streak.
The visitors lost seven of the first eight points, but battled back with seven straight to lead 8-7 and then again at 9-8. Unfortunately, that was the last time William Penn held an advantage on the night.
Lacey Taylor (Sr., Cedar, Iowa, Elementary Education) topped the offense with seven kills, while Katie Rielly (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Digital Communications) added six. Dayna Sammons (So., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Software Engineering) assisted on 15 winners, while Kylie Giger (Fr., Elkart, Ind., Undecided) served the team’s lone ace.
Taylor dug nine balls and Jeanette Cunningham (Jr., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Elementary Education) recorded two solo blocks.
Next: The Lady Statesmen travel to Forest City Saturday to play in a triangular hosted by Waldorf. William Penn opens against Oklahoma Wesleyan at 1:30 p.m. and then takes on Waldorf at 3 p.m.
