Kelly Scores Twice, Jacobs Gets Game-Winner Versus Viterbo
La Crosse, Wis.–The William Penn men’s soccer team evened up its league record Saturday with a 3-2 double-overtime win over Viterbo in Midwest Collegiate Conference play.
The Statesmen (5-6, 1-1 MCC) were outshot 18-13, but rallied to get the road victory.
Viterbo got on the board first in the 15th minute, but the visitors responded 12 minutes later on a goal by Angelo Kelly (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education). He was assisted by Waseem Vahed (Fr., Lenasia, South Africa, Computer Science) for his first career assist.
The V-Hawks (2-7-1, 1-1 MCC) went back ahead in the 56th minute, but Kelly again knotted up the contest with a score in the 74th minute. Victor Cruz (Jr., Elsa, Texas, Business Management) notched his first assist of the year on the play. Kelly, who now has a squad-high four goals, paced the offensive effort with four shots.
Neither team recorded another goal in regulation to force overtime. The first extra period was also played without a goal as was the first nine minutes of the second overtime. William Penn, who tallied four shots in the fourth overall period, finally took the lead and the win as Joshua Jacobs (So., Luton, England, Physical Education) scored unassisted in the 109th minute. Jacobs’ goal, on his only shot of the day, is his second of 2012.
Mason Bandy (So., Calgary, Alberta, Biology) managed eight saves in the win.
