Roger finished his long battle with cancer, Thursday morning, surrounded by his family at his home in Robins.

Roger Gene Denney, son of Lloyd Marvin and Lubertha Klyn Denney, was born, December 25, 1949, in Des Moines, Iowa. The family farmed near Wright when Roger was a young child and later moved to a farm near the Spring Valley Community. Roger’s early education was at the Prine School (now the school house at the Nelson Pioneer Farm) he went on to Oskaloosa High School where he was a 1968 graduate. He married the love-of-his-life, Gerry Kathleen Bowen, April 5, 1969, at St. James Episcopal Church in Oskaloosa. Roger and Gerry made their home in Oskaloosa and Roger worked at Ideal Manufacturing for a short time. He was then employed by Vermeer Manufacturing in Pella, first on the assembly line and later as a buyer and in management. He retired from Vermeer in 2006, after 30 years of service.

Roger and Gerry sold their home and moved into a large motor home following his retirement and they set off to see the country; his goal was to visit every national park. Roger so enjoyed the Grand Canyon he spent four seasons there, driving a tour bus, hiking and enjoying the area. Roger was a man of many interests and talents: early in his life he enjoyed bowling and starred on “Let’s Go Bowling” with Jim Zabel; he also enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing. Roger was self-taught on the guitar and the banjo; he played in a small group at retirement homes, churches and many bluegrass festivals; he enjoyed pickin’ and strummin’ with his friends. Roger’s family was the source of his greatest enjoyment; he shared all his interests and talents with them and just enjoyed the time they were together.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife of 43 years, Gerry of Robins; his daughter, Ann Denney of Robins; his son, Chad Denney of Oskaloosa; his parents: Lloyd and Lubertha of Oskaloosa; two grandchildren: Makenna Denney and Andrew Bechtel; a great-granddaughter, Alaina Denney; a brother, Craig (Diana) Denney of Geneseo, IL; two sisters: Karen (Marv) Hulbert of Longmont, CO; and Kristi Clark of New Sharon; three sisters-in-law, Ginger (Glenn) Turnbull of Jasper, AR; Beth (Jim) Wells of Summerton, SC; and Cathy Adamson of Laurens, SC; two brothers-in-law: Stephen Bowen of Fremont, IA; and Bruce (Ericka) Bowen of Fayetteville, AR; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his grandparents, Roger was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Larry Clark.

Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Hospice in Cedar Rapids.
