Statesmen Fall 2-0 to Solid Northwestern Team
Oskaloosa–A short-handed William Penn men’s soccer team gave one of the better teams on its non-conference schedule quite a fight Saturday evening, but in the end could not keep Northwestern out of the goal in a 2-0 loss.
William Penn (3-4) outshot the Raiders 8-5 in the first half to be in a scoreless tie at intermission. Unfortunately, Northwestern (5-2), picked third in the Great Plains Athletic Conference preseason poll, finally got past goalkeeper Mason Bandy (So., Calgary, Alberta, Biology) at the 51:15 mark. Bandy finished with six saves.
The visitors added their second score in the 67th minute, but despite producing several one-on-one opportunities, were denied another goal from great goalkeeping by Bandy.
Northwestern eventually won the shots category 16-14 with Cameron Russell (Fr., Denver, Colo., Industrial Technology) leading the Statesmen offense with four shots.
“Considering we were playing without several of our starters, I actually feel ok about this game,” Head Coach Greg Jarosik said. “We had a few guys get their first starts and they really stepped up. We just keep shooting ourselves in the foot, but when we get everyone healthy and stop making such bad mistakes, we have a chance to win a lot of games.”
