William Penn Slips Past Mount Marty 3-1
Oskaloosa–The Statesmen soccer team recorded two second half goals to defeat Mount Marty (S.D.) 3-1 in the opener of the William Penn Classic Friday night.
William Penn (2-3) dominated the Lancers (1-2) much of the night, but was caught in a 1-1 tie at halftime. The Statesmen found the back of the net first when Mark Dryden (Jr., Arbroath, Scotland, Arbroath HS) successfully converted on a penalty kick at the 26:59 mark. The goal is his first of 2012.
Mount Marty answered with its lone goal less than six minutes later however.
The Statesmen held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks and took advantage of one of them in the 56th minute when Dryden’s cross was knocked home by Victor Cruz (Jr., Elsa, Texas, Iowa Lakes CC) for his first goal in the navy and gold.
Matheus Riberio (Fr.., Victoria, Brazil, Cent. Edu. Charles Darwin) added an insurance goal, his team-leading second of the season, at 69:17 off a centering pass from Cameron Russell (Fr., Denver, Colo., Grandview HS).
Mason Bandy (So., Calgary, Alberta, St. Francis HS) saved three shots for the win. His offense owned a 25-7 margin in shots.
“I was pleased we had so many attacks,” Head Coach Greg Jarosik said. “We played well coming out of the back and applied a lot of great defensive pressure from the midfield.”
