William Penn Remains Winless with 3-2 Loss to Mount Marty
Oskaloosa–Something had to give, but unfortunately for the Lady Statesmen soccer team it did not give in their direction as Mount Marty (S.D.) rallied for a 3-2 win over William Penn in the opener of the William Penn Classic Friday night.
Entering the evening, both teams were battling long losing streaks with the Lancers (1-2) finally snapping theirs of 32 games (last win came on September 6, 2010). The Lady Statesmen (0-6), on the other hand, have now dropped 12 contests in a row, dating back to last October (forfeit over Viterbo).
The hosts notched the first score when Leslie Hernandez (Jr., Bolingbrook, Ill., Bolingbrook HS) put in a loose ball at the 28:56 mark. The goal was the first of her college career. The lead stood into halftime, giving the navy and gold their first lead at intermission this year.
Mount Marty knotted the game at 1-1 in the early going of the second stanza. Kate Thayer (Fr., East Fremantle, Australia, John Curtin HS) then put the Lady Statesmen back on top in the 63rd minute when she buried a penalty kick, her second goal of 2012.
The visitors returned the favor with a penalty kick score of their own less than three minutes later. Mount Marty, who outshot William Penn 14-12, took its first and only advantage at the 75:23 mark and held on for the win.
Amber Klootwyk (Fr., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) produced six saves in the loss.
Next: William Penn concludes the Classic Sunday by hosting Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) at noon.
