Lady Statesmen Drop Weekend Opener 6-1 to Indiana Tech
Milwaukee, Wis.–For the second time in its first three games, the William Penn women’s soccer team took an early lead, only to watch in evaporate as Indiana Tech stormed past the navy and gold 6-1 in non-conference play Saturday.
The Lady Statesmen (0-3), who will be hitting the pitch three times in three days this weekend at the Cardinal Stritch Tournament, played even with the Warriors (4-1) for the first 41 minutes of the contest. That all changed in the 42nd minute, however, when Silvia Munoz (Fr., Paramount, Calif., St. Matthias HS) gave her squad the edge by scoring unassisted at the 41:57 mark. It is her first collegiate goal.
Despite being outshot 15-2, William Penn entered intermission ahead by a goal, but it unfortunately would not last long.
Indiana Tech recorded the equalizer just 47 seconds into the second half, and the floodgates officially blew open. Two more scores were tallied in the next six minutes and three final celebrations were had by the Warriors before the final buzzer sounded.
The Warriors eventually finished the afternoon with a 39-2 edge in shots. Amber Klootwyk (Fr., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) managed eight saves in the start, while Laura Gentry (Jr., Fruitland, Idaho, Fruitland HS) had seven stops in relief.
