Oskaloosa Municipal Band For June 14, 2012

The Oskaloosa City Band during one of the weekly performances held June until August every Thursday at 8:00 p.m.
Oskaloosa, Iowa – This Thursday night at 8 p.m. marks the Oskaloosa City Band’s second concert of the summer. Due to technical difficulties last week, the pieces featuring soloist, Andrea Dursky were postponed. “June is Bustin’ Out All Over” and “Beauty and the Beast” are now well rehearsed and Andrea Dursky is once again on the schedule.
As usual, the band will open and close with two marches, one by Henry Fillmore and another by Karl King. The audience will hear a few new tunes this week. Ed Huckeby’s arrangement of “The Magic of Mozart” transforms the band into an orchestra for a brief moment. “The Irish Washerwoman” is new for the band, but the tune, which is based on a traditional Irish jig, will be very recognizable.
Each week, Director Bruce Peiffer, selects a “fiery overture based on a western theme”. This week’s selection is “The Cowboys” by John Williams. “The Cowboys”, the motion picture, starred John Wayne and was released in 1972.
“I’m A Believer” was written by Neil Diamond and performed by the Monkees, reaching #1 status for several weeks in 1966-1967. Neil Diamond has recorded it and released it on several of his albums. It was more recently recorded by Smash Mouth in 2001 and was featured in the motion picture, Shrek.
Each week at the end of the show, there will be a prize drawing, in commemoration of the bandstand’s 100 year anniversary. This week’s featured sponsoring merchant is Mathew Carpet and Marjie’s Menageries, located at 121 High Avenue East. Owners, Jim and Marjie Rinehart, have donated an Oskaloosa crock with a picture of the bandstand on it. You may sign up for the drawing at the table on the west side of the bandstand each week. A name will be drawn near the end of the concert and you must be present to win.
In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be cancelled. Announcements will be available via KBOE, the band’s Facebook page (Oskaloosa City Band Fan Page) and Twitter (Oskaloosa City Band).
