League Honorable Mention to Goldsmith

William Penn University Athletics

Oskaloosa–Statesmen golfer Shane Goldsmith (Fr., Benoni, South Africa, St. Dunstans College) made a big splash in his first collegiate season and was rewarded for his low scores as the 2011-2012 all-Midwest Collegiate Conference men’s golf teams were announced today.

Goldsmith was named to the honorable-mention squad, this year consisting of eight players. The league’s top five players, as voted on by the MCC’s coaches, garnered first-team recognition.

Josh Manske of Grand View was named MCC Player of the Year for the second year in a row, while Chris Winkel of Grand View was tabbed as MCC Coach of the Year for the third-consecutive season. John Milne of Mount Mercy earned MCC Newcomer of the Year laurels.

Goldsmith owned a 76.2 stroke average over 19 rounds of competition between last fall and this spring. He really warmed up in the spring, posting a 74.2 average in nine rounds.

The freshman had a low of 70 twice and owned a two-round best of 143 (71-72) at the Statesmen Spring Classic in March.

The left-handed linkster was in the top ten four times (nine events) and managed to shoot in the 70s on 16 occasions. He placed as high as second twice and was fourth at the MCC Championships to collect all-MCC Tournament honors.
