Osky News

This May 4th Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk event is all about “Art in Motion”, the creativity and passion of dance. The Art in Motion Art Walk features a showcase dance performance by local and regional dancers at the Sondheim Center. Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk’s The Art in Motion Showcase offers a wonderful display of the endlessly talented dancers, choreographers and mentors that keep Fairfield’s dance community thriving. Held every year as a fundraiser for Art Walk, the Art in Motion show is one of the more popular events. The Art in Motion Dance Showcase will feature over 40 dancers on the Sondheim Stage with 17 different dance styles and genres represented. Highlighted in this year’s show are dances such as Kathak, Swing, Jazz, Tap and Persian.

In addition to being a showcase of physical expression and talent, the Art in Motion show has provided an opportunity for many studios and dance instructors to encourage their students’ growth and help them gain more confidence in performing. “We view the Art in Motion show as an excellent way to get our students on stage, giving many of our children their first taste at performing. I love watching them unfold onstage!” said Tiffany Sanner, owner of Art of Dance Studio.

Hilary Jordan, owner of Passion Dance Studio, agrees “The Art in Motion show brings dance to the forefront of Fairfield consciousness and unifies our dancers around one thrilling goal of celebrating dance in a way it deserves.”

Showtime for the Art in Motion Show is 7:30pm at the Sondheim Center and doors will open at 7:00pm. Admission is only $5.

In hopes that the warm weather will continue, there will live music on the square from 5:30pm to 10:00pm, food and artisan vendors and the Art Walk Kid’s Korner on the Fairfield town square. Along with food and artisan vendors, the Maze of Murals artists will be at the Art Walk tent on the north side of the central park green. Come meet the Maze of Mural Artists around 6:00pm and chat with them about their latest projects. There are four Fairfield artists making murals for this project: Karla Christensen, Elaine Duncan, John Stimson and John Schirmer. These murals enrich the cultural value of our town adding the unique flavor of each local artist. The Maze of Murals project is made possible by grants from the Iowa Arts Council, the Fairfield Cultural Alliance, the Fairfield Convention and Visitors Bureau, and local donations from individuals and businesses.

From 5:30pm to 6:30pm, Global Warming will play at the town square Gazebo. Further, new to this month the “Art Walk Buskers” (live musicians) will, at various locations around the square, be offering live acoustical performances from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Featured Buskers are: Jeffrey Hedquist, Phoenix Jordan and Sharon Bousquet, Brooklyn Joe and Keith DeBoer. From 8:00pm to 10:00pm, Blue Cat Alley will perform at the town square Gazebo. As usual for Art Walk events, galleries and shops will be open.

The Limelight Lounge, located in the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center, will feature a Fairfield Comedy and Improv Group starting at 9:00 pm — Ben Estey, Eden West, Matt Speer, Sam Garles, Jesse Bailey and more. This event is free.
