Visitation: will begin at 11 a.m., Friday morning, April 20, 2012 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. The family will be present from 5 – 7 p.m. to greet visitors.
Funeral Service: 10 a.m., Saturday morning, April 21, 2012 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Reverend Liz Colton of St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ officiating.
Interment: Coal Creek Cemetery in SW Mahaska County.
Mary passed away Tuesday evening at the MHP Hospice Services Serenity House from complications from a fall on February 20, 2012. She was 93 years and 30 days of age.
Mary Sarilda Mattix, daughter of Squire Blevins and Maynee Alice Nedderman Huggins, was born March 18, 1919 in Topeka, Kansas. Mary’s family moved to the Lovilia, Iowa area when she was a young child. January 10, 1936, Mary married Donald Winfred Mattix in Unionville, Missouri. They first lived on a farm near Givin; when Don took a job in maintenance with Mahaska County Hospital, they moved to Oskaloosa. Mary was a stay-at-home mom while her children were young and later was hired by Midland Supply and Tool in their parts department. She then went to work at Oskaloosa International, also in the parts department. Mary retired in 1984. Mary was a member of St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ; there she was very involved in Women’s Fellowship. She was also a member of Mahaska Hospital Auxiliary, there she volunteered in the snack bar. Mary enjoyed flower gardening, crocheting, embroidery, playing cards and cooking for her family. Don and Mary also enjoyed bass fishing together.
Mary’s family includes her children and their spouses: Donna and Aaron Gray of Littleton, CO; Beverly Green of Murray, IA; Howard and Valerie Mattix of Omaha, NE; Bruce and Diana Mattix of Rocklin, CA; Karen and Dan Harris of Muscatine, IA and Sherry and Terry Porter of Muscatine, IA; 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 13 step-great grandchildren; 2 step-great great grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn (Richard) Stagg of Clovis, NM and a brother, George (Mary) Huggins of Newton, IA.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Don, on December 5, 2007; three infant children; an infant grandson; a son-in-law, Gordon Graves; four sisters: Margaret Clark, Dorothea Davis, Martha Page and Edith Grimm; two brothers: Joe and Louis Huggins and a half-brother, Cecil Moose.
Memorials may be made to Women’s Fellowship at St. Paul or the Coal Creek Cemetery Association.
