Junior A. Winegardner
Oskaloosa. Junior A. Winegardner, 91, of Oskaloosa, and formerly of the Union Mills neighborhood, died Saturday, April 21, 2012, at the Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. He was born September 21, 1920, at Rose Hill, the son of Loyd and Mary Chilcote Winegardner. Junior grew up on farms near Tracy, Iowa. He graduated from the Tracy High School with the class of 1939. While working on a wheat run in Sanborn, North Dakota Junior met the love of his life Marie Irene Larson Bergvik. On January 7, 1942, they were united in marriage at Lancaster, Missouri. They raised four children, Roy, Judy, Dick and Ted. Junior and Marie rented farms near Harvey, Knoxville, and What Cheer. In 1958 they bought their own farm in the Union Mills neighborhood. Junior retired from farming in 1979 but continued to live on the farm until 2011. He was a member of the Tracy Masonic Lodge # 163. He served on the North Mahaska School Board. Junior was an avid North Mahaska Sports Fan for over 50 years. He loved fishing, playing cards and reminiscing with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Marie Winegardner of Oskaloosa; their four children, Roy Bergvik of New Sharon, Judy (& Delbert) Moody of Tracy, Dick (& Co) Winegardner of Vass, North Carolina, and Ted (& Pat) Winegardner of Rose Hill; eight grandchildren, Roy (& Molly) Bergvik, Jr. of Othello, Washington, Kip Bergvik of New Sharon, Rita Wilson of Glendale Arizona, Darin (& Jennifer Wright) Moody of Tracy, Rick (& Sue) Winegardner of Vass, North Carolina, Becky (& Chris) Boyle or North Darthmouth, Massachusetts, Matt Winegardner of Austin, Texas and Mike (& Jill) Winegardner of Columbia, South Carolina; 21 great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren, two step great great grandchildren; and a sister Nellie Helwig of Knoxville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Wilma McKim and Dorothy Messamaker; three grandchildren: Kari Wright, David Moody, and Daryl Moody, and one great grandson, Sean Pulley.
Graveside memorial services and burial will be held Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at 1 p.m. in the Bellefountaine Cemetery near Tracy, with Pastor Bud Lane officiating. As was Junior’s wish his body has been cremated. The family asks that everyone meet at the cemetery by 12:50 p.m. for the graveside service. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Tuesday after 9 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Tuesday from 6—8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the North Mahaska Schools.
