Wrestling Team Receives Academic Laurel
Oskaloosa–The cream of William Penn’s wrestling crop also proved to be very successful in the classroom as the NAIA/NWCA All-Academic Awards were released.
The National Wrestling Coaches Association announced team and individual honors. The team GPA was based off the GPAs of the top 12 individuals who competed in varsity action.
William Penn tied for the fourth-best GPA at 3.16. Great Falls (Mont.) topped all NAIA squads with a 3.39 GPA.
NAIA All-Americans and national qualifiers were also honored for their academic successes. To be honored, All-Americans needed to have a minimum GPA of 3.0, while national qualifiers were required to reach the 3.25 mark.
Four Statesmen were recognized as a total of 57 grapplers represented the division.
Carey Cloud (Fr., Havelock, N.C., Tucker HS) was one of 19 All-Americans to collect the award as he owns a 3.19 GPA in industrial technology. Cloud was eighth at 149 pounds this year.
Kyle Soderblom (Fr., Newton, Lynnville-Sully HS), at 184 pounds, Ishmael Rempson (Fr., Olympia Fields, Ill., Rich Central HS), at 157 pounds, and Kory Morrow (So., Oskaloosa, Wartburg), at heavyweight, were on the national qualifier list.
Soderblom owns a 4.0 GPA in biology, while Rempson has a 3.49 GPA in engineering and Morrow has a 3.42 GPA in secondary education.
