Lady Statesmen Swept by #13 Olivet Nazarene
Bourbonnais, Ill.–The William Penn softball team faced off against Olivet Nazarene for the second and third times of the year, but unfortunately just like back in March, the Tigers got the better of the Lady Statesmen Friday.
William Penn (37-14) was swept in the non-conference twinbill by scores of 8-2 and 8-0 (6 innings). It is the first time the program has lost consecutive games since March 17.
The home team scored twice in the first inning of the day and then put another on the board in the third.
The Lady Statesmen narrowed the deficit to 3-2 in the fifth frame. Ashley Stream (Sr., Chariton, Chariton HS) led off with a single and KC Routos (Jr., Newcastle, Wash., Pierce CC) followed that with a double. Each player then sprinted across home plate on back-to-back sacrifice flyouts by Christine Gamble (Sr., Pahrump, Nev., Pahrump Valley HS) and Cassie Lohman (Jr., Burbank, Calif., Providence HS).
The Tigers (45-7) proved why they are so highly ranked, though, by putting five more runs on the board in the sixth to close out the win.
William Penn was outhit 10-5 in the opener. Jennifer Whitehead (So., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) struck out three batters, but fell to 17-8.
Lohman managed two of her squad’s four hits in the nightcap, but Olivet Nazarene produced ten base knocks and scored in four innings (three in the third and fourth) for the sweep.
Neither starting pitcher Nicole Danna (Jr., Boone, Iowa Central CC) nor reliever Amber Daly (Sr., Napa, Calif., Solano CC) had much success against the Tigers.
Next: William Penn travels to Chicago Saturday to face another ranked CCAC foe in #22 Saint Xavier. The doubleheader begins at 11 a.m.
