Question of the Week: Do You Think Your Employer or College Should Have Full Access To Your Facebook Page?

Osky News

Oskaloosa, Iowa – It used to be just a way for college kids to connect, but it has grown beyond its intended purpose into one of the most powerful websites in the world.

Facebook has changed the way people communicate and share their lives. Recently, more reports of potential employers and current employers seeking to be a ‘friend’ to your Facebook page as a condition of employment, as well as some colleges requiring student athletes to ‘friend’ the coach.

Employers look at having access to this information as a way of staying informed about their employees and also potentially damaging information concerning the company. Colleges see the access as a way of making sure the athlete is not engaging in activities that could be detrimental to the college or team.

An example of this is the Maryland Department of Correction that requires current staff and those seeking employment to give over full login information. This allows the DOC the ability to read everything on the person’s page; including private messages.

Rasmussen Reports just released a poll stating that 33% of Americans believe that employers have a right to fire those who post inappropriate Facebook content.

Now, it’s your turn to decide. Vote in our online poll. If you have any questions, please e-mail us at info@oskynews.org or visit us on our Facebook Page. Do You Think Your Employer or College Should Have Full Access To Your Facebook Page?
