Buena Vista holds off Central women’s basketball squad

Central College

STORM LAKE—Three players reached double digits but the Central College women’s basketball team couldn’t find an answer for Buena Vista Univ. in a 66-56 Iowa Conference defeat Saturday.

The Beavers grabbed an early 13-7 lead before Central jumped to a 20-15 advantage with a 13-2 run. Buena Vista responded with an 11-2 spree and held a 36-29 lead after the opening half. Central sparked a 7-0 run to open the second half and cut the margin to three, but the Beavers replied with a 9-2 run and maintained the lead the rest of the game.

Guard Alyssa Schwartz (junior, Titonka, WCLT HS) posted a game-high 16 points and career-best nine rebounds. Guard Kelsey Schuring (senior, Pella) had 12 points and guard Sarah Paulson (senior, Ottumwa) added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Buena Vista (9-10 overall, 4-6 conference) shot 38.5 percent, including 43.3 in the first half, while Central hit 35.1. The Beavers held a 40-39 rebounding edge and forced 23 Dutch turnovers.

Central, falling to 5-15 overall and 0-11 in the league, has lost seven games this season by 10 points or less. The Dutch look avenge one of those defeats, a 77-72 overtime loss to Cornell College, next Saturday in a women’s-men’s doubleheader at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. Cornell (7-10 overall, 5-5 conference) suffered a 58-44 setback to Loras College Saturday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.

Live stats and a video webstream will be available for both games through Central’s website at www.central.edu/athletics. Eric Gotschall will call the play-by-play on KRLS-FM (92.1). The broadcast can also be accessed at www.kniakrls.com.
