Dubuque–The Statesmen wrestling team did not have its top grapplers in competition, opening the door for the some of the other young guns to step up the plate at the Pat “Flash” Flanagan Open hosted by Loras Saturday.

Matt Smith (Fr., West Branch, West Branch HS) led the charge against a field packed with the entire Northern Iowa varsity lineup in addition to several other NCAA Division I wrestlers. The freshman posted a 2-2 record at 149 pounds.

Northern Iowa won five weight classes, while NCAA Division III powerhouse Wisconsin-La Crosse had two champs.

133-pounder Eric Van Wagoner (Fr., Portland, Ore., Westview HS) managed the team’s lone fall, while 141-pounders Marshawn Lacy (Fr., Chicago Heights, Ill., Rich East HS) and Serjio Proctor (Fr., Edinburg, Texas, McAllen Memorial HS) and 149-pounder Carey Cloud (Fr., Havelock, N.C., Tucker HS) were also victorious once.

Next: The Statesmen travel to Kirksville, Mo. Wednesday to take on NCAA Division II Truman in dual-meet action at 7:30 p.m.
