Four in Double Figures Breaks Losing Streak

Des Moines–The William Penn women’s basketball team returned to winning Wednesday night as four players reached double figures in a 69-58 victory over AIB in Midwest Collegiate Conference competition.

The Lady Statesmen (5-14, 3-5 MCC) went wire-to-wire to snap its three-game losing streak. The visitors outshot the Eagles 42.6%-31.2% and held a 49-44 edge on the glass. AIB falls to 8-12 overall and 1-7 in the MCC.

William Penn led 36-28 at the break and extended that advantage to as much as 20 points with 7:24 remaining in regulation.

Orielle Thomas (So., Waynesville, Mo., Waynesville HS) topped all scorers with 20 points in addition to 12 rebounds for her 12th double-double of her sophomore season. She was 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-5 from the line (WPU was 11-of-13 at the stripe).

Katie Golomski (Fr., Milwaukee, Wis., Pius Xi HS) added 13 points, while Jessi Kreuser (Fr., Mendota Heights, Minn., Henry Sibley HS) and Vanessa Kieres (Fr., Chicago, Ill., Regina Dominican HS) each managed 12 points. Kreuser matched Thomas with a dozen boards to notch her first career double-double.

Susan Smith (Jr., Eugene, Ore., Lane CC) may not have been very active in putting the ball in the basket (two points), but was influential in her teammates getting on the board, tallying nine assists on the night. Golomski finished with six assists as well.

Next: The Lady Statesmen host Ashford Saturday in MCC play at 1 p.m.
