Indian Harriers compete at Conference

Oskaloosa Indians

Brooke VanHouweling finished 5th to lead the Osky girls to a 4th place finish at the Little Hawkeye Conference Meet.  VanHouweling ran a time of 16:39 over the 4k distance to garner all-conference honors.  “Our girls ran really well tonight and I am quite proud of their effort tonight.  We ran as well as we have all year and ran to our potential.  We ran on this course two weeks ago and tonight, 12 of our 15 girls ran better times tonight”  Coach Comfort said. He also went on to say “This is a good young group of girls and they have potential to develop into an awesome team.   Brooke has fought a nagging injury most of the year and it was good to see her run so well to achieve all-conference.  We had some great performances by the jv girls as well, particularly Angela Hyland and Lesley Roquet.  We have quite a competition going on between our 6 to 10 girls and tonight Angela and Lesley were the winners.  They are a great group of girls and all but Amy Sarver and Mirjana Vidakovic will return next year.”

In the varsity boys race, Max Holle was the top finisher running 18:24 to finish in 33rd position in the 5k race.  “This was a very tough field and I thought our guys ran well.  All of them ran faster than they did when we ran here two weeks ago.  Max has been a great leader for us all year and I think he ran his best race of the year tonight.” said Coach Comfort. Coach Comfort also commented on the JV Boys race “Emory white and Charlie Comfort ran for the jv boys and each ran well.  Both are seniors running their final season for the Indians.”

The middle school boys finished their season with a tie for first with Newton with Newton winning the tiebreaker. Skyler Dejong finished in 1st to finish his season undefeated. Gerritt VanMaanen also cracked the top 10 finishing 7th overall. “This middle school boys team is very talented and will be a welcome addition to the high school boys team next year. They have run well all year long and Skyler and company will provide some much needed depth to the high school boys.” said Coach Comfort

In the middle school girls race, Payton VanWaardhuizen was the top finisher, finishing 15th overall. “The girls have shown improvement all year long. Payton had a nice finish to her season as I thought she ran very hard. She will be a very good addition to the girls high school team next season. The other girls have all worked hard and learned a lot in their first season of cross country.” said Coach Comfort

The high school varsity teams will run in their final meet at Districts at Knoxville next Thursday.
