Grinnell, Iowa- Congresswoman Michele Bachmann visited Carroll’s Pumpkin Farm in Grinnell Tuesday evening for a Family Leader fundraiser. The initial plans for the event were changed due to an unexpected visit from a group of college students. The group of around 40 students, some of whom were carrying homemade signs, began to chant and filled up an area on the farm. As a result of the students, local authorities had to be called. Bachmann instead met with donors in a more personal setting than what was planned.

After meeting with donors, Bachmann was given a tour of the Pumpkin Farm by Danny Carroll and his wife Joy. Bachmann spoke with the press after the tour. “I’m really grateful that the Carroll family opened up their pumpkin patch today, and also I’m grateful that I could be here for the fundraiser we had for the family leader. Today our focus has been on the Family, on standing up for the pro-life values, and also for faith. We’ve been meeting with pastors today and we’ve been meeting with people who are concerned about the pro-life movement. So we had our fundraiser today for the Family Leader, and we met with a number of people here from the Grinnell community who are very concerned that we stand up for pro-life values,” Bachmann said.

Bachmann was also asked about why the plans for the event were altered. “This was a private event and it was meant to be a private event, and so we met with people who were here who were supporting the Family Leader and that’s what we were doing in the first place. I think, if I understood correctly, that the college students just on their own and asked if they could come on the property and it would be up to the Carroll’s to say that. They said that they welcome them on their farm allowed them to come on but this was never intended to be a big public event. This was always intended to be a private event.”

Danny Carroll responded to a question asking Bachmann why she hadn’t spoken with the college kids. “We had some very special friends and guests who were invited and it was specifically for this fundraiser we wanted, out of consideration for those guests, to make sure they had the opportunity to spend some quality time with Congresswoman Bachmann.”
