William Penn Football Team Helps To Clean Up Osky
Members of William Penn’s Football Team spent just over an hour Tuesday helping to clean up the streets and lots on the East side of Oskaloosa.
The team worked along highway 23 from Casey’s, at University Park, all the way down to Family Restaurant. They then turned West going towards Wiggs. From there they went to the corner of South 11th and 3rd Ave. E., the Nazarene Church location, and headed East down towards Bank Iowa and the Heartland Square area, picking up litter and other debris along the way, from behind businesses and in the field used for the annual Bank Iowa Easter Egg hunt.
Head Coach Todd Hafner of William Penn’s Football team had this to say about the trash pickup, “This was a great opportunity for us, as a football program, to give back to the community. Steve Walter called and asked us to help and we immediately said yes. It was AMAZING the amount of trash people throw out their car window. I think the guys did a great job of getting as much of the trash picked up as possible. After an hour or so it was really nice to see how much better it made the area look.”
In the end, 21 bags of garbage were filled from the cleanup, plus one 25″ tv set that had also been dumped along the road. It would be amazing to see the amount of litter that could be cleaned up in Oskaloosa, when you take into account how much was collected from this area. In the end, approximately 80,000 linear feet of roadway was cleaned, or 1.5 miles.
In return for all the efforts put in by the team, Steve Walter of WAL-FAM Development Co. and Bank Iowa made a donation to the William Penn Football Team. The Iowa DOT provided the bags and hauled away the garbage when the job was done.
