Record flooding now expected on South Skunk River
Oskaloosa is about to set a bad record. More water coming down the South Skunk has pushed the river to near record levels, and is expected to push it to a record crest on Saturday. At 6:00pm Saturday, the level was 25.75 feet and rising. Flood stage is 20.0 feet and record level is 25.8 feet. The river is forecasted to rise to 26.4 feet before slowly falling below flood stage next week.
At this time our water supply is safe and it is expected to stay that way. This is all due in part to some major renovations that have been ongoing at the water treatment plant since last fall. This has been the worst flooding ever seen before in Oskaloosa and Mahaska County. On July 29th, President Obama added Mahaska County and 17 other counties to a presidential disaster proclamation.
