Question of the Week: Do you agree or disagree with the Synder vs Phelps ruling?

Last week, we asked you if you believed that the United States should get involved in the Northern Africa protests. 41 Residents responded with 36 residents (88%) saying No, 4 residents (10%) saying Yes, and 1 resident (2%) saying they were unsure. The question of the week poll is unscientific and does not reflect the view of Osky News.

This week we focus on a controversial issue. Earlier this week the US Supreme Court, in an 8-1 ruling, ruled that the protests by Fred Phelps at a United States’ soldier’s funeral were protected under the First Amendment. The ruling was the result of a year long case the resulted from the protests of Baptist Minister Fred Phelps at the funeral of a Soldier. The family of the Soldier sued Phelps after they claimed he showed up at the funeral yelling hate filled sayings at funeral attendees.

The ruling has caused a lot of discussion to occur on this matter. Many of the supporters of the ruling do not specifically support Fred Phelps but instead support the belief of the rights granted by the 1st amendment. They say that no matter how hate filled the protesters message is, they have the right to say what they want because of the rights granted by the 1st amendment. Opponents of the decision say that while the 1st amendment gives the protesters the right to protest, it was not peaceful and therefore was not in compliance with the 1st amendment. They cite claims that the Soldier’s family suffered physically and emotionally from the protests as reasons why they didn’t comply with 1st amendment.

Now it’s your turn to decide. Vote in our online poll. The poll will be open until 9 pm next Sunday when we will close the poll and release the final voting numbers. If you have any questions please e-mail us at info@oskynews.org or visit our Facebook page.
