Navarro Scores Four Times in Rout of Culver-Stockton
Canton, Mo.–Mario Navarro (Grad, Mira, Spain, Master’s of Sports Management) found the back of the net on four occasions as the Statesmen men’s soccer team dominated to the tune of a 10-0 Heart of America Athletic Conference win over Culver-Stockton Friday.
William Penn (8-0-6, 6-0-4 Heart), which extended its unbeaten streak to 14 games, outshot the Wildcats (0-12-2, 0-9-1 Heart) by a 27-4 margin.
The 10 goals are the second-most in program history and the most since scoring the all-time record 15 against Crossroads Bible on October 10, 2006.
The visitors did not actually get on the scoreboard until the 21st minute when Navarro put a ball in unassisted.
That opened the floodgates for the navy and gold with Navarro also beating the C-SC goalkeeper in the 24th and 33rd minutes for a 3-0 halftime edge. His second goal was assisted by Nick Nkansa-Dwamena (So., London, England, Business Management).
It took 12 minutes after intermission for the Statesmen to add to their lead. Andrea Brugora (So., Milano, Italy, Business Management) did the work by himself in the 57th minute, as did Nelson Dongmo (So., Munich, Germany, Mechanical Engineering) in the 69th.
One minute later, Navarro finished off one of the best individual performances in school history as he fired in a pass from Hector Bastos (So., Vitoria, Brazil, Computer Science).
Navarro’s four-goal ‘haul’ ties for the second-most ever at WPU, and are the most since Edin Sabic had five in the 2006 Crossroads Bible contest.
William Penn did not ease off the proverbial gas in the waning minutes, beginning with Raimu Shingo (Jr., Fukuoka, Japan, Business Management) scoring with help from Yugo Hashimoto (So., Saitama, Japan, Sports Management) in the 79th minute.
Gonzalo Rawinad (Fr., Gijon, Spain, Psychology), in the 83rd minute, tallied a goal with assistance from Max Mayer (Jr., Wendover, England, Exercise Science), while Victor Lozada (So., Valencia, Venezuela, Exercise Science) was successful three minutes later via Hashimoto’s second assist.
An unassisted score by Czak Martinez (So., Monument, Colo., Exercise Science) in the 88th minute finally capped the night’s action.
It was not just an offense-only victory for WPU as Sil Milder (Fr., Arnhem, Netherlands, Sports Management) and the Statesmen defense secured the ninth shutout of the year. The freshman managed three saves.
“This was a professional performance from start to finish by the guys,” Head Coach Joe Minton said. “We controlled the game in what most would consider a ‘non-WPU’ style. I want to also give a special shout-out to the guys who got their first goal of the year tonight, while giving a shout-out to the team as a whole for being a very connected squad.”
Next Up: William Penn travels to Dubuque, Iowa next Tuesday to face Clarke in Heart play at 7:30 p.m.
