William Penn Struggle in 2-0 Loss to Columbia

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen Esports team continues to search for its first win of the year after suffering a 2-0 loss to Columbia in Heart of America Athletic Conference Super Smash Bros Ultimate action Thursday.

WPU (0-6) sent out the trio of Brandon Thordarson (Sr., Bloomfield, Iowa), Brady Burge (Fr., Van Horne, Iowa) and Jayden Comstock (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa).

Game 1

Thordarson started the opening round on Mii Brawler, taking on Columbia’s No. 1, playing as Cloud. Thordarson started off hot, knocking out one of Cloud’s stocks early. Unfortunately, he could not get another knockout before losing his three stocks.

WPU then sent out Burge as its No. 2 on Bayonetta. Burge was able to force Cloud to the fighter’s limit on its second life, but lost all three stocks before he could capitalize on a knockout.

The Statesmen’s third brawler was Comstock on Lucario. Just like Burge, Comstock unfortunately could not capitalize against Columbia’s Cloud, putting WPU down 1-0.

Game 2

For the second-straight game, WPU sent out Thordarson as its No. 1, again as Mii Brawler. Unfortunately, he fell to Columbia’s Pyra and Mythra without taking a stock.

The second Statesmen player was Burge using Joker, but just like Thordarson, he could not find a rhythm, falling to Pyra and Mythra 3-0.

Columbia’s Pyra and Myrtha proved to be undefeatable as Comstock’s Mario was eliminated without gaining a stock.

“The scoreboard does not show the extent of good battles we are having,” Head Coach Austin Fagen-Scholes said. “We have a bye week next week, and the timing could not be any more perfect. We will refine our play and come into the final third of the season ready to do some damage.”

Next Up: William Penn is off a week, returning to action on Tuesday, October 27 to face Culver-Stockton in Heart action at 7 p.m.
