IOWA — Iowa attorney and Law on a Gravel Road founder Kathy Law has been appointed by Governor Kim Reynolds to serve as a member of the Empower Rural Iowa Initiative.
Law’s term began June 26, 2026.
The appointment builds upon Law’s professional leadership and her work brings greater attention to issues affecting rural communities, including the growing shortage of attorneys serving rural Iowa and the resulting challenges surrounding access to justice.
“Rural communities are incredibly important to the future of Iowa,” Law said. “I am honored to have the opportunity to serve, listen and learn alongside leaders who share a commitment to helping these communities thrive.”
Law has become an advocate for increasing awareness of Iowa’s rural attorney shortage and encouraging conversations about how communities can attract and retain the next generation of legal professionals.
That work also led to the creation of Law on a Gravel Road, a podcast and thought-leadership platform exploring rural access to justice and the people, policies and communities working to address the challenge.
Law believes that access to legal representation should be viewed within the larger conversation surrounding rural vitality.
“Strong communities need access to healthcare, education, businesses, infrastructure and professional services,” Law said. “Legal services are part of that ecosystem. When a community loses access to attorneys, the impact extends far beyond the courtroom.”
Through her appointment to the Empower Rural Iowa Initiative, Law looks forward to contributing her experience while learning from leaders throughout the state about the challenges and opportunities facing rural communities.
“This is ultimately about making sure rural Iowa remains a place where people can build careers, raise families, start businesses and create strong communities for generations to come,” Law said.
