Oskaloosa Students Invite Community to Join Homecoming Week Activities
Oskaloosa, Iowa – From September 14 to 18, Oskaloosa High School will be celebrating homecoming with powderpuff games, a parade in the downtown area, a coronation, and a football game against Washington.
Recently, the student council members from Oskaloosa High School went to the Oskaloosa News studio to talk about their plans for the week and to encourage the community to get involved. The seniors Jonah DeVore, Ireland McGraw, and Vani Patel spoke about the various activities, mentioning that there would be some friendly competition between the students and the classes.
The homecoming this year will have a road trip theme, with dress-up days at the high school and at the other schools in the district forming part of the festivities, and the parade floats will also follow this theme.
Powderpuff football for senior girls will take place on Monday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. and members of the community are invited to watch the maroon and white teams play.
In interview fashion, the students stated that both sides had begun to practice and work on their plays, and that DeVore was coaching the white team while McGraw was playing on the maroon team.
While they were talking the students put forward a few friendly challenges and were both sure of their chances.
Powderpuff volleyball is on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. in the gym at Oskaloosa High School, and McGraw stated that members of the community are welcome to attend that event too.
On Thursday, 17th of September, the homecoming parade will take place together with the crowning of this year’s king and queen.
The parade is due to start at 6.30 p.m. The students believe that the procession will begin approximately at 5 p.m. The route will follow High Avenue and go around the downtown square.
The class floats will take part in the parade with the students competing to win the top position; this year the senior class has the opportunity to complete high school with four consecutive wins in the float competitions.
DeVore stated that the Class of 2027 had achieved a win when they were first-year students, again as sophomores and once as juniors; the seniors are now aiming at their fourth victory, even though he also said that other classes are preparing to challenge them.
The winner of the float competition will be declared at the coronation, an event which will occur at the old Community Stadium right after the parade. The public are invited to attend the ceremony at which the homecoming court is recognized, and the king and queen are crowned.
The men who are running for king this year are Tyler Edgar, Grady Kennedy, Ayden Plumb, Carter Winchel and Jonah DeVore.
The women who are being considered for the position of queen are Kaylee Main, Naomi Cole, Hannah VanArkel, Ella Walter and Kylynne Roberts.
The Indians will be at home again on Friday, Sept. 18, when they play Washington at the Lacey Recreation Complex. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. as stated in the team’s football schedule.
DeVore, who is also involved in football, urged the residents to turn up and show their support for the team. During the interview the students stressed that members of the community are welcome to take part in the celebrations, whether they want to watch the powderpuff games or attend the parade, the coronation, and the football game on Friday.
