William Penn Drops 3-1 Decision to Chargers

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen women’s soccer team was denied back-to-back wins to open the campaign as it fell 3-1 to Briar Cliff in non-conference action Tuesday.

WPU (1-1) was outshot just 10-8, but struggled to ever get the proverbial engine going in its first loss of the fall.

BCU (1-0) got on the board in the 27th minute, and then tacked on another goal just before intermission for a 2-0 edge.

The visitors extended their lead to 3-0 in the 51st minute before Rakiya Morgan-King (Jr., Gloucestershire, England, Kinesiology) scored for the second game in a row.

The junior utilized her vertical to get to a corner kick from Eline Wijdicks (Sr., Bennebroek, Netherlands, New Media), heading the ball into the opposite corner to trim the margin to two at the 64:50 mark.

Unfortunately, the hosts failed to make the game interesting down the stretch as both sides were silent over the final 25 minutes of play.

Wijdicks and Iyna Patel (So., Hampshire, England, Exercise Science) topped the offense with two shots apiece.

“Unfortunately, this was a very lousy performance from our group tonight,” Head Coach Kaleb Preston said. “It all felt a bit low energy with us hoping others would do the work for us. We have to dig deep and find passion and learn from tonight.”
