Over 400 students in Mahaska County will head back to school this fall with the supplies they need to learn, grow, and succeed, thanks to the support of United Way of Mahaska County’s Back to School Fair.

The Back to School Fair is designed to remove barriers to learning by equipping students with the tools they need to begin the school year prepared and confident. Each year, this initiative brings together businesses, churches, volunteers, and community organizations united in helping young people realize their full potential.

Every child who registers receives a backpack filled with grade-appropriate supplies, a toothbrush, water bottles, socks, and other essentials. Younger children also receive books and preventative lice shampoo and conditioner, ensuring they start the year healthy and ready to learn. Thanks to a grant from Soles4Souls, many students also received brand-new shoes. While we were not able to provide shoes to every child due to limited sizes, the impact was deeply felt by the families who received them.

Parents shared heartfelt gratitude throughout the day, expressing how much the event eased the financial burden of preparing for school. Volunteers also spoke about how meaningful it was to serve local families directly — many describing it as one of the most rewarding community events they’ve been part of.

We were excited to work with the CERT Team again, who assisted with traffic flow and provided on-site emergency support, helping ensure the event ran smoothly and safely for all families.

“Sending children to school prepared doesn’t just meet a practical need — it builds confidence, supports classroom success, and strengthens the foundation for long-term achievement. When students walk into school feeling ready, they are more likely to engage, participate, and thrive. “ Michella Friesen, Executive Director

United Way of Mahaska County invites the community to stay involved beyond the Back to School Fair. Day of Caring is coming up on September 11, and registration to volunteer is available on our Facebook page. We also have volunteer opportunities year-round, call the office at 641-673-6043, email Shawn at shawn@uwmahaska.org, or visit volunteermahaska.org to get connected.

United is the Way.
