Fareway Donates Over 69,000 Pounds of Ham to Help Feed Iowa Families

Fareway Stores, Inc. today announced a major donation of hams to support families served by three key hunger‑relief partners: Food Bank of Iowa, Food Bank of Siouxland, and River Bend Food Bank. The donation event took place earlier today, reinforcing Fareway’s continued commitment to nourishing communities across its service region.
The contribution will help thousands of families struggling with food insecurity, providing high‑quality protein—a critical but often scarce item for many households.
Fareway Stores, Inc. announced a major food donation this week that will help thousands of families across Iowa. On February 3, 2026, the Iowa-based grocery company donated more than 69,000 pounds of ham to food banks that serve people facing hunger during the winter months. The donation equals 5,504 individual hams that will go directly to families in need.
The announcement was made in Johnston, Iowa, and highlights Fareway’s ongoing effort to support communities across the state. The company said the donation is part of its mission to strengthen families and make sure Iowans have access to quality food when they need it most.
The hams are being distributed through three major food bank partners. The Food Bank of Iowa will receive 60 percent of the donation. The Siouxland Food Bank and River Bend Food Bank will each receive 20 percent. These organizations will then deliver the food through local pantries, shelters, and hunger relief programs that serve thousands of households.
The donation includes a mix of premium ham products, including spiral hams, classic half-size hams, and full-size carver hams. These are the same types of meats many families enjoy during holidays and special gatherings. Food bank leaders say the protein-rich food will help stretch meals and provide nutrition during the coldest part of the year.
Fareway leaders said supporting hunger relief is a core part of the company’s values. Company representatives attended the announcement alongside food bank partners and thanked the organizations for their work moving food quickly and safely to families. Food bank officials said the donation will fill hundreds of thousands of plates across Iowa and help families who are struggling with rising grocery costs.
The Food Bank of Iowa reported the gift will support more than 5,500 families. Leaders from Siouxland and River Bend food banks also said the donation strengthens their ability to provide high-quality food instead of only shelf-stable items, which is especially important for children and seniors.
Fareway Stores, Inc. operates 143 grocery stores across seven Midwestern states and employs more than 13,000 people. The company is known for its full-service meat departments, fresh produce, and customer service. Fareway is a family-owned business and has repeatedly been recognized as a top employer in Iowa.
Company officials say they hope the donation does more than fill freezers. They want it to bring comfort and dignity to families while reminding communities that local partnerships can make a real difference. Fareway and its food bank partners say they plan to continue working together to fight hunger and build a healthier Iowa.
