Cardiac Central gets another late men’s basketball victory

PELLA – A back and forth affair needed two extra periods but the Central College men’s basketball team came out on top of a 93-91 game Saturday night against Buena Vista University.

Central (10-8, 3-6 American Rivers Conference) and Buena Vista (11-7, 4-5 conference) had 18 lead changes and were tied 18 times over the course of 50 minutes.

The victory marks Central’s first double overtime win since 2012. Dating back to the 1964-65 season, Central had never won a double overtime game in Pella, going 0-4 in such contests.

Anthony Gott (sophomore, Davenport, North Scott HS) had 28 points and 12 rebounds while Owen Schipper (sophomore, Waukee) had 26 points and 14 rebounds to give the Dutch two players with double-doubles. Schipper had 22 points after halftime and Gott had 21.

Braylon Thomsen (freshman, Carbon Cliff, Ill., Davenport Assumption [Iowa] HS) added 17 more points. Thomsen and Schipper each had four assists while Gott had four blocks.

Both teams made 32 baskets but the Dutch did it on 20 fewer attempts. The Dutch and Beavers also both made 10 3-pointers but Central did that on 10 fewer attempts. Central made 19 of 24 free throw attempts while Buena Vista made 17 of 22.

Central hosts Nebraska Wesleyan University at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
