NM Boys Fall in Wild Game
NEW SHARON – Lee Crawford and Kevin Kelderman have had their teams battle each other on the baseball field for many years with some of them becoming instant classics. Wednesday’s encounter at North Mahaska was another one of those. Kelderman’s North Mahaska Warhawks held a 9-4 lead after five innings before Crawford’s Sigourney Savages rang up nine runs en route to a 16-10 victory.
Each team scored a run in the first and Sigourney took the lead 2-1 but NM answered with two runs then added three in the fourth to lead 6-2. The Savages added two runs and NM answered with three.
Sigourney scored 12 runs in the final two frames and limited the Warhawks to a singleton in the bottom of the sixth inning.
North Mahaska pounded out 10 hits in the contest led by Ryan Groom with two singles, a double and two RBI. Hunter Wernli hit a single and double with three RBI and Jack Kelderman added a single with two RBI. Tyson Ferguson hit a single with two RBI. Dylan Meland doubled and Lucas Nunnikhoven and Luke Boender singled.
Rylan Spray threw for the Warhawks going five innings with six runs on six hits, two walks, a hit batsman and a pair of strikeouts. Wernli threw 2/3 innings allowing five runs on three hits, two walks, two hit batsmen and one strikeout.
Isaac Bruns led the Savage hitting attack with two singles, a double and three RBI. Lincoln Powers hit two doubles with two RBI and Brady Clark added a single with two RBI.
Caden Clarahan pitched for Sigourney going two innings allowing a run on one hit a walk, hit batsman and three strikeouts. Solon Yates threw two innings yielding seven runs on fur hits, two walks, four hit batsmen and two strikeouts. Clark earned the win going the final three innings. He gave up two runs, three hits, a pair of walks and six strikeouts.
