Johnson Wins 60, Qualifies for Nationals at Nebraska Invite
Lincoln, Neb.–In his first outing of the year, Showalter Johnson (Sr., Nassau, Bahamas, New Media) proved he will again be one of the nation’s best sprinters as he led a small William Penn men’s track and field crew at the Nebraska Invitational last Friday.
Johnson won the 60-meter dash crown with a time of 6.80 seconds. His time not only clinched the title, but also punched his ticket for the NAIA National Championship as he met the provisional standard.
The senior was fifth in the 200-meter dash as well with a time of 21.98 seconds.
Micah Mills (So., Houston, Texas, Psychology) guided the jumpers by placing third in the triple jump at 44-5.5 and fifth in the long jump at 21-1.5.
Xzavion West (Jr., Guthrie, Ky., Undecided) was WPU’s lone thrower, taking fifth in both the shot put (48-0.75) and the weight throw (52-8.75).
“It was a solid day for us,” Head Coach Victoria Vinokur said. “Although it was just a few people, they came out swinging. Our entire team has yet to compete, but if our first two meets are any indication, we are in for a competitive season on both sides.”
Next Up: William Penn is off until after the holiday break, returning to action on Saturday, January 11 by traveling to Davenport to compete in the St. Ambrose Battle in the Hive.
