Oskaloosa Boys JV Wrestling Team Competes Strongly at Knoxville Tournament
The Oskaloosa boys’ junior varsity wrestling team had a strong showing at the Knoxville JV Tournament on Monday night, with several wrestlers earning top finishes. The team was led by Sam Nelson and Trevin Griffin, both of whom won their brackets. Ivan Montgomery and Landon VanDonselaar each earned third place finishes, while Carter Russell and Carter Jordan finished in fourth place. Arabsho Davlatshoev had to medically forfeit both of his matches but showed strong sportsmanship throughout the competition.
Sam Nelson and Trevin Griffin Shine with First-Place Finishes
At 132 pounds, Sam Nelson had an outstanding tournament. He received a bye in the quarterfinals and then dominated his competition, pinning Trevor Payette from Pella in 3:06 in the semifinals. In the finals, Nelson won by fall over Liberto Iniesta from Winterset in 5:09 to claim first place and score 24 team points.
Trevin Griffin also earned a first-place finish at 150 pounds. After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, Griffin made quick work of his opponents, winning by fall over Curtis Mathes from Centerville in just 40 seconds in the semifinals. In the final, he pinned Will Cox from North Mahaska in 2:00, securing the top spot in his bracket and adding another 24 points to the team total.
Strong Performances by Ivan Montgomery and Landon VanDonselaar
Ivan Montgomery wrestled hard at 138-144 pounds, finishing in third place. He started his tournament with a dominant win by fall over Brayden Tucker from Winterset in 1:27. However, Montgomery fell short in the semifinals, losing a tight 12-10 decision to Gambrel Deardorff from ADM. He bounced back in the third-place match, pinning Lewis Crannell from ADM in 1:22 to secure his spot on the podium and contribute 15 team points.
Landon VanDonselaar also battled to a third-place finish at 285 pounds. After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, VanDonselaar was pinned by Nathan Woolums from Chariton in the semifinals. However, he showed resilience, winning his third-place match by forfeit against Noah Meador from Winterset, earning 11 team points.
Carter Russell and Carter Jordan Each Finish Fourth
Carter Russell, competing at 120 pounds, faced a tough road in his bracket. After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, Russell lost in sudden victory 8-5 to Nathan Prough from ADM in the semifinals. He then lost by fall to Adolfo Rodriguez-Andrade from Ottumwa in the third-place match, finishing in fourth place and contributing 7 team points.
At 150 pounds, Carter Jordan also earned a fourth-place finish. After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, Jordan was pinned by Will Cox from North Mahaska in the semifinals. In the third-place match, Jordan lost by fall to Curtis Mathes from Centerville, finishing in fourth place and scoring 11 team points.
Arabsho Davlatshoev Faces Setbacks
Unfortunately, Arabsho Davlatshoev had to medically forfeit both of his matches at 165 pounds. Despite the setbacks, Davlatshoev continued to support his teammates and showed great character throughout the tournament, earning 3 team points.

The Oskaloosa JV wrestlers demonstrated great determination and skill at the Knoxville Tournament. With first-place finishes from Sam Nelson and Trevin Griffin, third-place finishes from Ivan Montgomery and Landon VanDonselaar, and solid performances from Carter Russell and Carter Jordan, the team continues to build momentum for the rest of the season.
