Central women’s basketball team never trails in win
PELLA- Led by 42 bench points, the Central College women’s basketball team won its first game of the season 90-49 against Monmouth College (Ill.).
“It was a great response from last night,” said coach Justin Weiland. “We will need to respond during the season when times are tough, and I thought we did a great job responding and it took everyone. We did it together.”
The bench unit was led by guard Jasmyn Williams (junior, Denver, Colo., Arvada West HS) who had 10 points and seven assists, guard Allie Rateike (sophomore, Marshall, Wis.) with nine points and forward Bailey Reding (junior, Grundy Center) also had nine points.
“They came in with great energy,” said coach Justin Weiland. “It goes to show how deep we are.”
As a team Central (1-1) shot 41.6% from the field and 32.5% from three-point range. The squad also never trailed in the game.
Guard Abby Johnson (senior, Ankeny) led the Dutch with 15 points and had four steals. Forward CeCe Moore (sophomore, Waterloo, West HS) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
“(Johnson) was taking the right shots,” Weiland said. “After a tough game yesterday due to the way St. Olaf was guarding her, our goal was to get her some shots early.”
Guard Emily Naughton (sophomore, Indianola) had six points, five assists and five rebounds. Guard Hannah Dau (senior, Paullina, South O’Brien HS) added nine points and Gabby Moore (senior, Waterloo, West HS) added seven points.
“It was great to see Dau, Williams and Naughton get downhill and putting pressure on the paint and finding the kick out threes,” Weiland said.
The team continues its homestand when Grinnell College comes to the P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium Wednesday at 7 p.m.
