Grinnell Football Falls to UChicago Despite Strong Effort
CHICAGO — The Grinnell Pioneers faced a tough challenge on Saturday, November 9, as they went up against the University of Chicago Maroons at Stagg Field. The Pioneers scored early but ultimately could not overcome UChicago’s high-powered offense, falling 42-6.
Grinnell started strong, with Lucky Carton scoring a 7-yard rushing touchdown midway through the first quarter, bringing the score to 7-6 after a blocked extra point. However, the Maroons responded quickly, adding three touchdowns in the first quarter alone, led by quarterback Teddy Gouldin, who finished the game with five touchdown passes.
The Pioneers put up a valiant effort on both offense and defense. Carton led Grinnell’s ground game with 61 rushing yards on 19 carries. Quarterback Henry Baird completed nine of his 11 passes for 78 yards, but the team struggled to convert on critical downs and maintain possession, finishing with three turnovers.
On defense, Bert Greene stood out with nine total tackles, including half a sack. Despite their strong defensive stand, Grinnell was unable to contain UChicago’s explosive plays, as the Maroons scored three more times in the second quarter to build a commanding 42-6 lead by halftime.
