Statesmen Defeat Mount Mercy 3-1
Cedar Rapids, Iowa–The Statesmen men’s soccer team kept unblemished this fall as it secured a 3-1 victory over Mount Mercy in a Heart of America Athletic Conference match Saturday.
#6 WPU (10-0-1, 4-0 Heart), which is off to its best start in school history, outshot Mount Mercy (3-4-1, 0-3-1) 9-7.
William Penn opened the match’s scoring John-Joe Mullane (Jr., Kent, England) intercepted the ball from an MMU defender and fired the ball into the net from 10 yards out at the 19:15 minute.
The Statesmen doubled their lead when Connor O’Reilly (Sr., Letterkenny, Ireland, General Accounting) sent the ball to Luigi Mongan (Sr., Manchester, England, Business Management), who flicked it into the back of the net in the 29th minute.
Just two minutes later, Mount Mercy scored to cut WPU’s lead in half.
With four minutes left in the match, though, a long goal kick from Sean Bohan (Sr., Dublin, Ireland, Business Management) made its way to Hugo Cornish (So., Sydney, Australia, Business Management) in front of the Mustang’s net, who slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to put the game on ice.
“Mount Mercy is a team that needed a win, so we knew they would give us everything,” stated Head Coach Simon Brown. “It is really tough to win on the road and we got another win. We are excited to go home and play Grand View, one of our biggest rivals.”
