Grinnell Falls to Macalester in 4-0 Defeat

The Grinnell College men’s soccer team struggled to find their footing against a strong Macalester College side, losing 4-0 on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at Macalester Stadium. The loss drops Grinnell to 1-2-3 on the season, while Macalester improves to 6-1-0.

Macalester dominated possession, controlling 66% of the game, and outshot Grinnell 17-5. The Scots struck early, scoring three goals in the first 21 minutes. Hans Haenicke opened the scoring in the 16th minute, finishing a pass from Ondieki Maina. Just a minute later, Maina scored one of his own, assisted by Chris Frantz. Frantz then added a third goal in the 22nd minute, giving Macalester a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.

Grinnell had limited chances offensively, with their best opportunity coming from forward Samuel Gojjam, who recorded two shots on goal. However, Macalester’s goalkeeper, Sam Price, was up to the challenge, making two saves to preserve the clean sheet.

The second half saw more pressure from Macalester, as Haenicke completed his brace with an unassisted goal in the 59th minute, sealing the 4-0 victory. Grinnell goalkeeper Caden O’Neil worked hard to keep the scoreline from getting worse, making seven saves throughout the match.

Grinnell had moments of solid defense and earned four corner kicks but failed to convert them into scoring opportunities. The team was also hampered by fouls, committing seven during the match, which disrupted their flow.
