Oskaloosa, IA – The streets of Oskaloosa buzzed with excitement as a 100-year-old resident celebrated her milestone birthday with a special motorcycle ride, thanks to the efforts of Kelly Klein, a Meals on Wheels volunteer.

Klein, who has been delivering meals to the centenarian for four years, has formed a close bond with her. “She told me two weeks ago that the hardest things in her life to give up were her pickup and riding,” Klein said. This heartfelt confession inspired Klein to arrange a unique birthday surprise.

Doris McGee, with a large smile and a charming personality, was excited to once again take a ride on a motorcycle, something she and her late husband used to enjoy.

Klein made sure everything was in place, getting the green light from the centenarian’s daughter. “She’s going to ride on a trike with a friend of mine,” Klein noted, emphasizing the importance of safety. The trike, offering more stability than a regular motorcycle, was the perfect choice for the special occasion.

The centenarian’s excitement was unmistakable. “My heart’s bursting right now,” Klein admitted. “She’s really excited. When we told her about it, her gentleman friend reminded her, ‘Don’t forget Saturday at 10 o’clock,’ and she replied, ‘I don’t care if I have to write it on my calendar or put it in my Bible, I will remember.'”

The rumble of more than half a dozen motorcycles headed east towards Lake Keomah, but a quick stop was needed so McGee could put a bandanna on to help preserve her hair that had just recently been done.

As the riders passed east of town, McGee was seen with a huge smile and a wave to everyone along the way.
